MSP (Medical Services Plan) does not cover cosmetic nose surgery. It may cover functional nasal surgery when there is a documented medical problem, such as a deviated septum (septoplasty), turbinate hypertrophy, nasal valve collapse, chronic nasal obstruction, or reconstruction after a fracture or tumour removal.
Many patients combine both. In that case, MSP may pay the functional portion while you pay privately for the cosmetic rhinoplasty portion. Keep in mind that MSP billing generally applies to procedures done in a hospital such as Vancouver General Hospital or Mount Saint Joseph, not in a private clinic operating room, so choosing a private facility usually means paying facility and anesthesia costs yourself.
Extended health plans in BC rarely reimburse cosmetic work. Ask for a referral from your family doctor for functional assessment.
